Only Known Example of 1917 Air Ministry Issue RFC Watch
Please note I am open to sensible offers on all my watches. If you would like to make me an offer please click above and enter the watch title in your email then mail me your best offer.
We know that the Air Ministry issued a number of wrist watchches in 1917 and this is the only known surviving example of the watch.
The case back is marked with the Crows Foot stamp awn A for Air Ministry. The movement is Omega, this is correct for the RFC issued watches, let me explain:
The General Watch Company was founded as ‘Société d'Horlogerie La Générale’ in 1894 or 1895 with factories in Biel/Bienne and Reconvilier.
In 1880 the Brandt brothers moved their business ‘Brandt Fils’ to Biel/Bienne and transformed it into a manufacture, which subsequently became the Omega Watch Company.
In 1906 the Brandt brothers withdrew from involvement with the General Watch Company which went its own way, soon diversifying into better quality watches with lever escapements such as the one shown here and was the model issued by Omega for the RFC watch in 1917.
Ignore the stupid price as this is Offers only please.
